Multilingual EU Law: on the Significance of Translation for Legal Harmonisation

Despite its serious commitment to legal multilingualism and the fact that the European Union spends more than €1 billion on translation and interpreting every year, the concrete role of translation in legal harmonization has not been a topic of thorough investigation. Highlighting the complex role of translation in forging a common European legal culture and the particular significance of legal translation in the interpretation and application of multilingual EU law, this presentation discusses the specificities of EU official legal multilingualism and the relevance of translation theories and practices in the quest for transparency in European legal discourse.
