“Time in the Court of King's Bench”
Speaker: Professor Douglas Hay, Professor of Law and History at Osgoode Hall Law School and the Department of History, York University
Venue: Oxford Law Faculty Lecture Theatre II, St Cross Building, Manor Road Oxford
Douglas Hay has written extensively on eighteenth-century legal, social and political history, notably on the uses of the criminal law in social ordering, the death penalty, and master and servant law. The seminal 1975 collection he edited with E.P. Thompson and others, Albion’s Fatal Tree: Crime and Society in Eighteenth-Century England, and which included Hay’s classic essay “Property, Authority and the Criminal Law”, was reissued in a new edition in 2011. In 2010 Professor Hay published the first fruits of major new research entitled Criminal Cases on the Crown Side of King's Bench, and his Youard Lecture will draw on this research.
