Labour Law Discussion Group
The Social Right to Paid Annual Leave

Speaker: Mr. Michael Ford, Old Square Chambers Barrister

Venue: Brasenose College Medieval Kitchen

Mr. Ford will examine the right to paid annual leave in Article 7 of the Working Time and related Directives and the problems of translating that right into domestic law. He will look especially at the Stringer case and subsequent decisions of the ECJ (or, now, Court of Justice) on how the right applies to workers off sick, and the Williams litigation on the maintenance of pay during annual leave, and consider why domestic courts have found it difficult to give effect to the principles of the Directives.
