Alistair Darling is one of only three MPs to have been a Cabinet minister throughout the
entire period Labour was in government from 1997 to 2010.
He has been Chief Secretary to the Treasury; Secretary of State for Social Security, for Work
and Pensions, for Transport, for Scotland, and for Trade and Industry. He was Chancellor of
the Exchequer from 2007 to 2010.
As Chancellor he had to deal with the first run on a British bank since 1860 and with the
worst financial crisis in modern history.
