Intellectual Property Discussion Group
The intersection of freedom of expression and copyright in Canada

Speaker: Graham Reynolds, Assistant Professor, Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University and D.Phil candidate, St. Peter’s College (University of Oxford)

Venue: Oxford Law Faculty Seminar Room F

Copyright laws prevent individuals from expressing themselves in certain ways using copyright-protected expression. In so doing, copyright restricts expression. Given this, there would appear to be a deep tension between copyright and freedom of expression, a fundamental right instantiated in numerous international human rights treaties and constitutions around the world. How do these two sets of rights interact? How are they negotiated? How ought they to be negotiated? This presentation will explore these questions through the lens of Canadian law.
