Comparative Law Discussion Group
The Proposal for a "Common Law Code" for Rwanda
Speaker: Professor Robert S. Summers, Cornell University
Venue: Institute of European and Comparative Law IECL and Seminar Room C
Professor Summers has been asked to draft a 'Common law code' of contract law as part of the Rwanda commercial law reform project. The new code would replace part of the existing Civil code now in force in Rwanda which was imported from Belgium. The new code would be largely based on the American Restatement of the Law 2nd, Contracts. The lecture should not only be of interest to comparative lawyers, but also to contract lawyers, commercial lawyers and legal theorists, as the project raises a number of very interesting questions of substantive contract law, of mechanisms of law reform, of legislative drafting and interpretation as well as of general comparative law (legal transplants, possibilities of reconciling common law and civilian methodologies etc.). Professor Summers is very keen to hear the views of Faculty members and students.
