Christoph Kumpan is a Senior Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign Private Law and Private International Law, Hamburg, Germany. After working for Dresdner Bank AG, Berlin for two years and studying Economics and Law at the Humboldt University in Berlin and the University of Heidelberg he graduated from the University of Heidelberg in 2000 and then joined the Max Planck Institute. In 2001 he was awarded a scholarship of the Bucerius Foundation and the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes. In 2002 he obtained a masters degree (LL.M) from the University of Chicago Law School and passed his Second State Examination in Hamburg in 2004. He completed his Doctoral Thesis on the Regulation of Alternative Trading Systems and was awarded the Otto-Hahn-Award of the Max-Planck-Society for the Advancement of Science e.V. and the Academic Award 2005 (1st Rank) of the Deutsches Aktieninstitut e.V. He joined the New York Bar in 2005. In the same year he served as an expert adviser to the German Federal Ministry of Finance and from 2006 to 2007 as an expert adviser to the Capital Markets Board of Turkey in the field of capital markets regulation. Since 2004 he is a member of the working committee of the Stock Exchange Expert Commission at the German Federal Ministry of Finance.
