Oxford Mooting

Oxford/Oxford Brookes Inter-Varsity Moot (sponsored by the Oxford Bar Society)

The Oxford Bar Society is proud to be partnering with Selborne Chambers, a Commercial Chancery set with a good professional negligence practice. Selborne Chambers will be supporting a number of the Oxford Bar Society's forthcoming mooting events, and are keen to support the society's endeavours to promote the Bar to its members.

The Oxford Bar Society was established in 2011, and works with the Law Faculty, Careers Service, Inns of Court, Law Schools and Chambers to expose Oxford Students from all disciplines to career paths at the Bar. It has hosted a number of distinguished speakers, such as Lord Kerr, Baroness Hale, Michael Mansfield QC, and Courtenay Griffiths QC. It is also a hub of legal debate in Oxford, hosting a termly panel event exploring issues such as human rights, and whether we own our own bodies.

This particular moot, which has also been made possible due to the generous support of 11 New Square Chambers, concerns current issues in the law of defamation. Richard Benson QC will be deciding a case in the 'Supreme Court' between a fictitious government employee, governmental agency and a tabloid newspaper which seeks to answer the question whether it should remain the law that a defendant can be liable for publishing a potentially important story about a public figure if that defendant fails to meet the standards of “responsible journalism”, but is not malicious. Also a ground for appeal is whether it should remain the law that a “governmental body” cannot bring a defamation claim even against a defendant which has maliciously published a false story.

The moot is between two members of the Oxford Bar Society, and two undergraduate law students at Oxford Brookes university, and will be held in Oxford's Crown Court, in the heart of the city centre. All are welcome to attend at 5:50 for a 6pm start.
