Oxford Mooting
Shearman & Sterling University of Oxford Moot Competition
The Shearman and Sterling Moot is held every year with the generous sponsorship of Shearman and Sterling LLP. It takes place during Hilary Term. Twelve teams are selected on the basis of written submissions, and then compete with each other in a series of ten-minute-per-speaker "lightning moots" through the morning. The top four teams progress to the semi-finals. Both the preliminary and the advanced rounds of the competition are judged by faculty members of the University of Oxford, and barristers at Shearman and Sterling LLP. The Grand Final has traditionally been judged by a prominent legal figure (for instance, in 2013, the Rt Hon Sir David Keene PC was the judge). The competition has seen keen participation from students in the past, and we hope it will continue to do so in the future.
2013 Edition: Balliol and Queen’s Law Students Triumph at the Shearman and Sterling Moot
The Shearman & Sterling LLP University of Oxford Moot Competition was held at St. Catherine’s College, the University of Oxford, on Saturday, January 26, 2013. Twelve teams of two members each, having been selected from a wider pool on the strength of their written submissions, engaged in oral argument through the morning. They were judged by members of Shearman and Sterling LLP, as well as members of the law faculty at the University of Oxford. After three rounds of stiff competition, four teams progressed to the semi-finals. The semi-finals were keenly contested affairs, with the judges remarking on the impressive quality of the submissions. At length, the team of Senthilkumaran Sabapathy (Balliol) and Scott Tan (Queen’s) on the one hand, and Claire Overman (Keble) and James Fagan (Mansfield), on the other, progressed to the Grand Final. The Grand Final was judged by the Rt Hon Sir David Keene PC, who declared the contest to be an excellently argued and very closely-fought affair. Finally, it was Senthilkumaran Sabapathy and Scott Tan who were crowned the winners of the moot.
The Law Faculty is grateful to Shearman and Sterling LLP for their continued involvement and interest in its activities and events.
