Asma Vranaki
DPhil Law
I am currently in the final year of my DPhil in Law at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies. I am aiming to submit my thesis in April 2013.My research focuses on the role of law in protecting privacy and copyright interests in Online Social Networking Sites and employs the Foucauldian and Actor-Network Theory analytic lens of power which I have developed.
In terms of my academic background, I am a law graduate from the London School of Economics where I graduated with an average of 68% with firsts in Jurisprudence and Company Law and a high 2:1 in Advanced Torts (68%), EU Law (67%) and Commercial Contracts (66%). After my LLB, I was awarded a scholarship by the Centre for Commercial Law Studies of Queen Mary and Westfiled College to undertake a LLM in Computers & Communications Law. Following the successful completion of the Bar Vocational Course at the Inns of Court School of Law(ICSL) (London), I was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2003.
In terms of my professional background, I undertook the first half of my pupillage at Juristconsult Chambers (Mauritius) one of the leading commercial chambers in Mauritius. I undertook the second half of my pupillage at the first-tier commercial chambers, Fountain Court Chambers (London), under the tutelage of Akhil Shah QC and John Taylor. After being called to the Bar of Mauritius, I was a tenant at Juristconsult Chambers until late 2005, specialising in all aspects of commercial law with an emphasis on Corporate Finance, Contract,IT/IP &Telecommunications, IP and E-Commerce. I was appointed as a Bar Vocational Lecturer at ICSL from September 2006 to August 2008, where I lectured in various subjects including Civil Litigation & Evidence, Drafting, Opinion Writing, Commercial Law, Company Law and Civil Advocacy.
