It is with sorrow that we have learned of the death of Alan Rodger, Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, on 26 June 2011.

Sandra Fredman appointed Rhodes Professor

 

Sandra Fredman has been appointed to the Rhodes Professorship of the Laws of the British Commonwealth and the United States in the Faculty of Law with effect from 1 September 2011. Professor Fredman will be a fellow of Pembroke College.

Oxford ranked top for Law by The Times and by a Legal Week student survey

Legal Week 

For the second year running Oxford was ranked top for Law in The Times Good University Guide, and the University as a whole was placed top. The Law Faculty was also ranked as "excellent" by more of its students than those at any other UK university law school, in Legal Week’s annual student survey.

Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowship awarded to Dorota Leczykiewicz

 

Dorota Leczykiewicz (Trinity College) has been awarded a three-year Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowship, to start in Michaelmas Term 2011, entitled "Applying EU norms against individuals".

Robert George awarded a British Academy Post-Doctoral Fellowship

 

Robert George (Jesus College) has been awarded a three-year British Academy Post-Doctoral Fellowship, starting in Michaelmas Term 2011, for his project on "The realities of relocation: analysing disputes over post-separation family migration in the English trial courts".

Oxford's Pro Bono Publico programme (OPBP) has created a new scheme of Internship Fund Awards, to enable students to undertake an internship at a public interest organisation. The 2011 recipients have been announced.

Law Open days – 16-18 March

The Law Faculty was pleased to welcome nearly 600 sixth-form students from 16 to 18 March, to help them learn more about the study of law in Oxford.

Mooting

 

The University of Belgrade wins the Monroe E. Price International Media Law Moot 2011

Twenty-six teams from nineteen countries were welcomed to Oxford for this year's finals, held from 30 March – 2 April, to argue a case involving issues of filtering content on the internet, on national security, and on privacy.

 

Oxford team excels at the Fourth International Roman Law Moot

Team member Mateusz Krauze (HMC) [second from right] was awarded the Clifford Chance Best Oralist Award and Michael Harper (Somerville) [at right] received the prize for the second best oralist, while Oxford narrowly missed first place overall.


Oxford International Intellectual Property Moot 2011

Twenty-two teams attended the moot, which touched on trade-mark infringement, passing off, unfair competition and breach of confidential information.

Commemoration of the 50th anniversary of HLA Hart’s "The Concept of Law"

A special series of talks on "The Concept of Law", commemorating the 50th anniversary of HLA Hart’s landmark work, was held over four consecutive Thursdays in May 2011.

6th Roger Hood Annual Public Lecture

Professor Frances Heidensohn of the London School of Economics (pictured here with Ian Loader and Roger Hood) gave the 6th Roger Hood Annual Public Lecture on 25 May, entitled "Impact and Influence in Contemporary Criminology: The Question of Feminism".

"What's in a Name?" The Third Intellectual Property Conversazione

The Third Intellectual Property Conversazione was held at St Catherine’s College on 18 March, in conjunction with the Oxford International IP Moot.

Conference on the Foundations of Law

The Foundation for Law, Justice and Society, at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies organised a two-day conference on the "Foundations of Law" in early June, hosted at St John’s.
