New Chichele Professor of Public International Law

Catherine Redgwell

Catherine Redgwell has been appointed as the new Chichele Professor of Public International Law, following the retirement of Professor Vaughan Lowe QC in September 2012.

Oxford Alumni on the Bench

The Honourable Mr Justice Beatson has been appointed as Lord Justice of Appeal.

The Honourable Justice Glazebrook was appointed to the New Zealand Supreme Court in August 2012, joining Justice Chambers who was appointed in December 2011.

The Honourable Justice Patrick Keane, presently Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Australia, has been appointed to the High Court of Australia.

Professor Jane Stapleton wins the William L. Prosser Award

Professor Jane Stapleton has been awarded the prestigious William L. Prosser Award by the Association of American Law Schools.

Ansgar Ohly

Ansgar Ohly has been appointed Professor for Civil Law, Intellectual Property and Competition Law at the University of Munich.

Carolyn Hoyle

Congratulations to Carolyn Hoyle, who has begun her term as Director of the Centre for Criminology, as successor to Ian Loader.

Katja Ziegler

Katja Ziegler, Eric Brost Lecturer at St Hilda’s College, has been elected to the Sir Robert Jennings Chair in International Law at the University of Leicester.

Roger Hood

Roger Hood, Emeritus Fellow of All Souls, received the European Society of Criminology's 2012 European Criminology Award 'For a lifetime Contribution to European Criminology', at this year's Annual Conference in Bilbao.

RESEARCH NEWS

Funding awarded for new Criminology research project

 

Dr Mary Bosworth has been awarded a major €1.2 million Starter Grant from the European Research Council to conduct a five-year project on 'Subjectivity, Identity and Penal Power: Incarceration in a Global Age'.

Oxford Hong Kong Mooting Competition 2012

On 15 September Peter Chiu and Sheena Wong won the Oxford Hong Kong Mooting Competition, sponsored by Clifford Chance. The Competition was followed by a ten-course Chinese dinner.

On 7-8 November 2012, two moots were held in Exeter between Oxford and the University of Exeter, in an initiative conceived and supported by the Oxford Bar Society.

Law Undergraduate Leads Oxford to Varsity Rugby Victory

 

Sam Egerton, an undergraduate at Keble College, put in an inspirational performance at the Varsity Rugby Match helping to secure Oxford’s third consecutive victory over Cambridge.

Clarendon Law Lectures

Lord Collins of Mapesbury gave this year’s Clarendon Law Lectures, on 'Justiciability in National and International Law'.

Festschrift for Andrew Ashworth

In November Worcester College hosted a seminar and drinks reception to honour Professor Andrew Ashworth and to mark the publication of a book of essays, 'Principles and Values in Criminal Law and Criminal Justice', edited by Lucia Zedner and Julian Roberts.

Dean's Visit to China

In September the Dean spent a busy week in Beijing, visiting law schools in the city and meeting with alumni and benefactors.

Lord Hoffmann in Toronto

In November Lord Hoffmann spoke on 'Tort Liability for Public Authorities in Canada and the UK' at a lecture attended by current and former students, academics and practising lawyers, past and present.

High Sheriff's Law Lecture

Lord Wilson of Culworth of the UK Supreme Court delivered the High Sheriff’s Law Lecture in October, on the subject 'Out of his Shadow - the long struggle of wives under English Law'.

Forum on Imprisonment

On 29 November a Forum on Imprisonment took place at the British Academy in London. It was co-sponsored by All Souls College and by the British Academy Policy Centre, which is currently conducting a study of 'Crime, Punishment and the Prison.'
