Border Policing and Security Technologies

Sanja Milivojevic, Research Fellow in Criminology, La Trobe University, Melbourne

Since 2013, Dr Sanja Milivojevic's research has focused on the intersection of borders and technology with particular attention to the use of technological inventions (e.g. security systems, databases, drones), as well as modes of resistance by border-crossers (through social media, mobile phones). In her 2019 book, Border Policing and Security Technologies Sanja concentrated on security and counter-security technologies in the Western Balkans, as the second-largest migration route during the 2014-2016 migrant "crisis". Currently, she is examining the development of digital frontier technologies in a global context. This new project will analyse the impact of these processes on the development of security and counter-security technologies in both the Global North and the Global South.
