Professor Sharon Pickering, of Monash University, along with online publication The Conversation's Asylum Seeker Expert Panel, has been awarded an Australian Human Rights Commission Human Rights Media Award for their 2012 series on asylum seekers. Between June and August 2012, the panel, under the leadership of Prof. Pickering, published 14 articles on asylum seekers, advocating a human rights based response. Australia has, for many years, pursued an increasingly tough line on asylum seekers, particularly those who arrive by boat, placing them for indefinite periods in (predominantly offshore) immigration detention centres. Prof. Pickering, along with colleagues at Monash, Oxford, the US and Norway, has been at the forefront of drawing criminological attention to these matters. Examples of her work and of the broader research network can be found at the Border Observatory Website.
