Introduction

I studied the BA in Law at King’s College Cambridge and graduated in 2019. I’m from Singapore and completed my pre-university education there. Prior to university, I spent two years in the Singapore Army as part of my mandatory national service.

What are your career ambitions?

I will be joining the Hong Kong bar after I graduate. I aim to build a broad practice including commercial law, insolvency and intellectual property and I hope to contribute to the legal community as much as I can.

Is life in Oxford different to what you expected it to be?

I expected it to be similar to life in Cambridge, and indeed it is. Apart from being slightly more traditional, Oxford has the same world class teaching, dizzying array of events and opportunities, and excellent support system. As for my college, the modern architecture of St Catherine’s was somewhat of a surprise at first, but I quickly grew to love it.

What aspects of your law degree have proved to be the most useful in your career so far?

Beyond knowledge of the law itself, the three most useful skills I have acquired from my legal education are (i) using a logical framework to dissect complex factual circumstances, (ii) presenting my views clearly and effectively, and (iii) understanding and absorbing large amounts of information. These skills have proven to be invaluable time and time again during my internships and mini-pupillages.

What have you found most challenging about your programme so far?

Finding the right balance between my academic commitments, self-care and time for family and friends. There never seems to be enough hours in the day, and some very astute time management and study strategies are necessary if you wish to achieve all you set out to do.

Are you involved with or joined any projects or societies?

I am an avid powerlifter and can be found in my college gym most days of the week. However, I have no plans to compete this year – having been on the Cambridge blues team, I do not wish to go up against my ex-teammates!

Through the generosity of Des Voeux Chambers, we are delighted to offer a scholarship worth £10,000 for students embarking on the BCL.
