International Human Rights Law Summer School concludes successful 2026 programme
The Bonavero Institute of Human Rights at the University of Oxford's Faculty of Law has successfully concluded the 2026 Oxford International Human Rights Law Summer School, delivered in partnership with George Washington University Law School.
Over 26 days, the residential programme brought together 55 participants from around the world, including 18 students recruited through the University of Oxford and 37 through George Washington University. Based at New College, participants combined intensive academic study with the experience of living and learning in one of Oxford's historic colleges while building an international network of peers committed to advancing human rights.
Directed by Dr Eliza Bechtold at the Bonavero Institute and Professor Edward T. Swaine of George Washington University Law School, the IHRL Summer School provided an immersive exploration of both the theory and practice of international human rights law. Throughout the programme, participants examined the legal frameworks, institutions, and mechanisms that underpin the international human rights system, alongside contemporary challenges shaping the field today.
The academic programme featured daily lectures from an internationally recognised faculty of scholars and practitioners, complemented by interactive small-group seminars. Participants studied the Fundamentals of International Human Rights Law, with some also participating in the advanced Human Rights Lawyering course. They also specialised in elective subjects including Human Rights and Artificial Intelligence, Freedom of Expression in the Digital Age, Individual and Group Rights, Refugees and International Human Rights Law, and War, Peace and Human Rights.
Teaching was delivered by experts from the University of Oxford and leading institutions, bringing together academic scholarship and practical experience from legal practice, international organisations and human rights advocacy. Tutors included Dr Thiago Alves Pinto, Professor Helen Duffy, Dr Marija Jovanović, Professor David Kaye, Professor Stuart Casey-Maslen, Professor Stephen Meili, Dr Daragh Murray, and Professor Alexandra Xanthaki. The programme encouraged participants to engage critically with emerging legal issues while sharing perspectives from their own jurisdictions and professional backgrounds.
Beyond the classroom, participants experienced Oxford's collegiate tradition through a programme of social and networking events. The Summer School began with a formal welcome dinner at New College and concluded with a farewell formal dinner at Mansfield College, providing opportunities to strengthen the professional and personal connections formed throughout the programme.
