High Sheriff Lecture 2019

When I was asked to do a profile of myself for Black History Month I asked, are you sure and they said yes just be you. So here it is.

Hi everyone I am Zoe, currently the Baker McKenzie Access Officer for The Faculty of Law, what that means is I get to do what I love which is encouraging and supporting potential students into Higher Education with a focus on groups who are underrepresented at university.

I came to work at The Faculty about three years ago, first as The Admissions Officer and then moving on to my current role. Before this, I was based at Oxford Brookes University where I worked as an Admission Officer for a number of years and studied Law and Business as an undergraduate. While battling for student’s rights as a part of the Students Union Executive Team.

With that said no profile about me would be complete without me saying I am Bajan. And being from Barbados I always try to bring a positive energy to everything I do. Which is why I have found myself working at The Faculty of Law.

I applied to The Faculty with my eye on The Access role as I strongly felt that the skills and knowledge I developed as an Admissions Officer and my personal characteristics aligned with what The Law Faculty was attempting to achieve through their Access Programs. As cheesy as it may sound I want to make a difference and working here, doing what I am doing I feels like I am. Oxford is not perfect but as we know nowhere is and here I feel like I am doing something positive.

The Last bit the editor asked for:

If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?

Be Braver!  Believe more in yourself and ideas! Take advantage of every opportunity

 &

Who inspires you? Is there a particular quote you would like to share?

I am inspired by the people around me and how we all manage to keep going. So my fav quote for today would be from my friend Judith.

Better to be scared and going for something than just being scared.

Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced. - James Baldwin

When you become the image of your own imagination, it’s the most powerful thing you could ever do. - RuPaul
