Operation Turning Point is a randomised controlled trial which was designed to compare the effectiveness of a deferred prosecution with conditions against court prosecution with low harm offenders. The Turning Point design has already influenced changes to the pre-court diversion regime in West Midlands and the National Diversion trial in 3 forces. There are already important results from Turning Point which provide lessons on how police can increase victim confidence in pre-court treatments, on the process of implementing consistent treatments for offenders by the police and in the challenges for police in triaging offenders in custody. There are also important lessons on sustaining high levels of consistent treatment in experimental conditions - a key critique of experiments by Clarke and Cornish, Pawson and Tilley and Sampson
