You are warmly invited to the one-day symposium entitled The Manifestation of Religion or Belief in the Public Sphere” organized by the Faculty of Law, University of Oxford in partnership with the Centre for Policy and Research on Turkey. This event will take place from 10:30 to 15:15 on Saturday, 14 June 2014 at the Cube Lecture Theatre, Faculty of Law, University of Oxford, St Cross Bldg, St Cross Rd, Oxford OX1 3UL.

A short introduction about the symposium: The freedom of thought, conscience and religion is the fundamental value of a democratic society. Turkey and the United Kingdom (UK) acknowledge this freedom through numerous international and regional treaty commitments in principle. However, the implementation of this freedom in relation to the manifestation of religion or belief in the public sphere has been challenging as new political and social realities call for deeper understandings and more exacting implementation. Panellists will explore the understanding of two vital international organisations - the Human Rights Committee and the European Court of Human Rights – in relation to this topic. In addition, there will be a comparative analysis of Turkey and the UK.

This event is free. However, it requires a pre-registration for participation. Please contact ozgur.cinar@law.ox.ac.uk
