While all eyes are fixed on the looming emergency at Greece’s numerous border locations and refugee camps, the thousands who are administratively detained have been, for many years, largely unaccounted for. Despite the scale and inhumanity of detention practices, immigration detention in Greece has rarely been subjected to close scrutiny. Andriani's PhD research at the Sociology Department, Lancaster University, is the first national study of immigration detention centres in the country through an innovative combination of empirical research, first-hand accounts and personal involvement with detention issues. As such, it aims to map the immigration detention system and to record resistance mobilized against it. In doing so, it hopes to provide a critical account of state power and offer glimpses of hope about radical change.
