Dr Elizabeth Stubbins Bates is a Junior Research Fellow in Law at Merton College, Oxford. She recently completed her AHRC-funded PhD at SOAS, University of London on the obligation to train the armed forces in international humanitarian law. Before her PhD, Elizabeth taught at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and was the first David Davies of Llandinam Research Fellow at the LSE Department of International Relations. Prior to that, Elizabeth was a legal adviser and consultant legal adviser to human rights organisations, including Amnesty International. She holds an LL.M. from Harvard Law School, and a BA in Jurisprudence from Oxford.  Elizabeth’s work has been published in the International Review of the Red Cross, the European Journal of International Law, and International Legal Materials, and she has presented her research in the UK and internationally.
