Esther van Schagen is the Newton International Fellow. Her research focusses on the question of how EU impact assessments can contribute to better EU contract law, particularly Directive 93/13 on unfair contract terms and Directive 1999/44 on consumer sales.

She previously researched EU impact assessments in EU private law as a postdoc at the Endowed Chair for Law and Governance at the University of Groningen. She defended her PhD thesis on the development of European private law in the European multilevel legal order in Tilburg University.
