Maayan is a DPhil Candidate at the Centre for Criminology at Oxford. Maayan came to the Centre to work with Prof Mary Bosworth and Prof Lucia Zedner, as she explores intersections of border control, state penal power, race and ethnicity. She completed her BA in Political Science and African Histories at Tel Aviv University, and an MSt in Socio Legal Research from the University of Oxford. Maayan’s academic studies correspond with over a decade of work on social justice issues in Israel, particularly focused on migration and minority rights. She has been involved in grassroots organizing and NGO activism alongside migrant communities in Israel from Ethiopia, Sudan and Eritrea; as well as the Israeli resident community in South Tel Aviv. Her current research focuses on detention of African Asylum Seekers in Israel.
