Queer Rural X is a research-artistic collaboration led by CSLS postdoc researcher/artist Dr Kira Allmann and actor/director/writer Timothy Allsop, alongside the theatre and education company Turn of Phrase, the creative collective, Cherry Soup Productions, and the film production team at Fresh Cut Video. The project will collect life story interviews with rural LGBTQIA+ people for a free, public archive at the University of Oxford and adapt these stories into a theatre piece and short documentary film.

Queer Rural X explores how rural LGBTQIA+ communities experience (dis)connection in a rural setting. Through spotlighting rural experiences, we hope to decenter queer aesthetics from urban, metropolitan spaces. We will also look at the impact of digital communications technologies on queer rural spaces, generational divides, social life, coming out experiences, and support service access.

This project is funded by a TORCH Humanities Cultural Programme grant and a project grant from the Arts Council England, and further supported by the Law Faculty Research Support Fund.
