Abstract
Synthetic data is increasingly presented as a means of enabling the development, training and evaluation of artificial intelligence systems while reducing reliance on personal data. Yet its legal status is considerably less straightforward than its technical promise may suggest. The generation, sharing and use of synthetic datasets within the AI lifecycle unsettle established assumptions about the processing, protection and control of data, while bringing different areas of law—including data protection and intellectual property—into complex and sometimes uneasy interaction. Against this background, the seminar explores whether existing legal concepts can adequately accommodate synthetic data and its evolving uses in the age of AI, or whether a more integrated approach to its legal governance is needed.
