Oxford among the top 4 teams of the world in the Jessup Moot Court Competition 2024

The 2024 University of Oxford team ranked among the top 4 teams in the world in the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition 2024. This matches the best result that Oxford has previously achieved in the Competition, last attained in 2015.

The team comprised undergraduate students Jessie Cheuk (Magdalen), Anna Jimenez (Magdalen), Kartikay Kataria (St Peter’s), Zahra Lahrie (Brasenose), Asirini Parakrama (Magdalen), and was coached by DPhil student Konstantinos Giorkas (St Anne’s).

In this record-breaking year for Jessup, 674 universities from more than 100 countries and jurisdictions participated in the competition, with only 150 managing to qualify for the international rounds.

After qualifying from the National Rounds in London, in February, where it topped the preliminary rounds, and all three oralists ranked among the top 10 oralists: Anna Jimenez (best oralist), Zahra Lahrie (5th best oralist), Jessie Cheuk (8th best oralist), the Oxford team travelled to the international rounds in Washington DC (March 31st to April 6th,  2024).

In the preliminary rounds, Oxford achieved four wins out of four, competing against BRAC University (Bangladesh), University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), University of British Columbia (Canada), and Chongqing University (China) ranking among the top 16 teams of preliminary rounds.

In the elimination rounds, the Oxford team defeated the University of Boston (USA) in the round of 32, the University of Columbia (USA) in the octo-finals, and the National Law University of Delhi (India) in the quarter-finals. In the semi-finals, Oxford competed against the Universidad Torcuato di Tella (Argentina) where the latter prevailed in a tightly contested match.

For the third consecutive year, the University of Oxford has solidified its position among the world's top 16 teams, reaffirming its consistent excellence at the prestigious Jessup Competition.
