The Globalisation of Islamic Law

A three year fellowship funded by the Leverhulme Trust, 2023 - 2026

The project investigates the role of Islamic law in Saudi Arabia’s quest to become the leading political and cultural power in the Muslim world. Saudi Islamic scholars have developed a unique version of Islamic law, which questions traditional doctrines and authorities. By providing free Islamic legal education and judicial training programmes, Saudi Arabia has established a transnational network of Islamic judges, through which the kingdom spreads its version of Islamic law. The project explores this network and its key actors for the first time and analyses how Saudi Arabia influences the global development of Islamic law in the 21st century.
