About Business Law

Within this broad field are colleagues, and in many cases groups, working on alternative dispute resolution, banking law, commercial law, company law, financial regulation, insolvency law, law and finance, restructuring law, securities law, takeover regulation and tax law.  The Commercial Law Centre at Harris Manchester College is part of the Business Law activities in Oxford, and its website is linked to this one.

Whilst a large part of our work is focused on English law, our scope is increasingly comparative and international, with an emphasis on the EU and US, as well as Commonwealth legal systems and growth markets such as China, India and Brazil. A significant component of our work is interdisciplinary, furthered through strong links with economist colleagues in the Saïd Business School. We convene a lively and well-attended Business Law Workshop series on Wednesday lunchtimes, as well as an active programme of conferences.

Business Law at Oxford enjoys strong research links with the legal profession, and include both practitioners and members of the judiciary in our seminar and conference activity. Our general research funding from the government is complemented by a mixture of grants and donations from various sources. Members of our group are actively involved in policy-related work for bodies such as the Commonwealth Secretariat, the European Commission and ESMA.

Oxford’s Business Law group has a strategic alliance with Columbia Law School, with a faculty exchange component that has flourished into a number of joint conferences and research projects. We have an active doctoral programme, many graduates of which have gone on to become colleagues here and at other universities.
