OPBP members and volunteers attend the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council hearing

On 8 July 2026, members of the Oxford Pro Bono Publico (OPBP) Executive Committee and volunteers working on a research project examining the decolonisation of colonial-era laws in the Caribbean attended a hearing before the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council (JCPC). The hearing proved to be an invaluable learning opportunity. The issues before the JCPC, particularly the interaction between the challenged legislation and the constitutional savings clause, highlighted the complexity and significance of constitutional litigation in the Commonwealth Caribbean. Observing the arguments first-hand enabled the volunteers to gain a deeper appreciation of the broader constitutional context in which their research is situated and the legal challenges associated with reforming colonial-era legislation.
