Immigration Detention and the Changing Nature of Penal Power

This project is run by Mary Bosworth, Director of Border Criminologies and Director of the Centre for Criminology, University of Oxford

Lead by Mary Bosworth this project has many strands, including work on everyday life in immigration detention centres in the UK of staff and detainees, and human rights monitoring of detention sites in Greece, Hungary and Italy.  In 2010, Mary created the Measure of the Quality of Life in Detention (MQLD) Survey. With assistance from Alice Gerlach, in 2017, the survey and its methodology was thoroughly revised. The survey has been adopted for use also in Portugal and Italy. Mary's work on detention has been ongoing since 2009 and has lead to numerous publications, many of which are available free to access on the Border Criminologies SSRN paper series.
