Part of Mary Bosworth's ERC Starter Grant, this project builds on her ethnographic research in IRCs, to focus, in particular on detention custody staff.  Based on ongoing research in two centres, it is particularly interested in how staff make sense of their work. In addition to contributing to greater understanding of staff views and experiences, it engages with the literature on prison staff in the sociology of punishment. What does it mean to be a 'detention custody officer'? What is their role? What are some of its effects?
