Climate Mobility Justice
The Institute for Law and Policy on Climate Mobility is a pioneering hub that sits within the Faculty of Law at the University of Oxford. Bringing together legal experts from practice, policy, academia and front-line organisations, the Institute is at the forefront of developing innovative, rights-based solutions that effectively respond to the legal and policy challenges arising from climate-related mobility.
Climate change and ecological disasters are impacting the habitability of the planet. The effects of slow-onset climate change effects (such as sea-level rise and desertification) as well as rapid-onset climate impacts (such as storms and floods), are re-shaping human mobility.
Climate mobility refers to the full spectrum of mobility and immobility impacts that climate change has on human habitability. This includes temporary and permanent migration, forced displacement, planned relocation, and situations of immobility.
The Institute’s approach is four-pronged:
- Evidence-based research and advocacy for innovative, rights-based policies on climate mobility
- Capacity building organisations and institutions with technical legal expertise to more effectively and accurately respond to climate mobility
- Technical legal assistance to strategic litigation efforts to improve climate mobility rights
- Demystifying climate mobility through strategic communication and narrative change campaigns
The Institute for Law and Policy on Climate Mobility is at the forefront of thought leadership on climate, migration and human rights.
