CSLS acknowledges the passing of Monroe Price

Monroe Price in Oxford

It is with great sadness that the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies has learned of the passing of Professor Monroe E. Price. Monroe first came to the CSLS in the early-1990s on sabbatical after his term as Dean of Cardozo Law School.  At CSLS, Monroe established the Programme in Comparative Media Law and Policy and worked closely to support the development of other centres around the world, from Moscow to Delhi, Budapest, and Philadelphia, while writing about media law with a focus on democratic transitions and post-conflict situations.

Monroe remained actively involved in CSLS for over three decades. He founded the Oxford Media Policy Summer Institute, collaborated with CSLS researchers on numerous research projects in Somalia, Sudan, India, China, Iraq, and many other places, and encouraged the development and expansion of the Price Media Law Moot Court Competition, which he often joked he was named after. He was a force of energy and enthusiasm, unwaveringly generous, possessed an exceptionally critical, contrarian, and mischievous mind, and had an extraordinary gift for bringing people together.  A truly global scholar, he brought many early career scholars under his wing, and into his vast and exceptionally fun network, always finding ways to nurture scholars and new research from understudied places.

CSLS will be celebrating Monroe’s contributions to the field and will provide further information in due course. If you are interested in participating or getting involved, please email pcmlp@csls.ox.ac.uk.
