Daniel Herszberg Wins Social Sciences Prize at 2026 Research Presentation Competition

CSLS DPhil student Daniel Herszberg has been awarded the Social Sciences Prize at the 2026 Research Presentation Competition held at St Cross College.

The annual competition invites doctoral researchers to present their work in just five minutes, using no more than three slides, with a focus on communicating complex research to a non-specialist audience. Participants are assessed both on the strength of their research and on the clarity and accessibility of their presentation.

Daniel and other competitors

Daniel received the prize for the strongest presentation in the Social Sciences division. His presentation, “Custodians of Dissent: Hong Kong’s Former Pro-Democracy Protestors under the National Security Law,” is drawn from his doctoral research examining questions of law, legitimacy and political culture in the Greater China region.

This recognition reflects the quality and contemporary relevance of Daniel’s work and underscores the contribution of innovative, globally engaged social science research within the Oxford community.

The judging panel noted the consistently high standard of entries across disciplines, with presentations that were ambitious, rigorous and responsive to pressing global challenges.

Daniel’s success speaks to the intellectual vibrancy of socio-legal research at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies. We warmly congratulate him on this achievement.
