Translating Legal Obligations in practice in Organ Donation and Transplantation
Elements of this Project:
1. Transplantation Medicine in the Paediatric Context: from legal theory to medical ethics in practice
Two closed workshops, examining children's capacity, and conflicts of interest. This project is funded by a grant from the John Fell Fund.
Transplantation medicine raises specific questions about informed consent and risk assessment; however, the issues arising from the need to ensure informed consent are magnified in the paediatric context both in relation to decisions to donate a child's organs and to accept a transplantation. This project will focus on children and their rights in addition to conflict of interests in conjunction with relevant stake holders in order to better understand how the law is applied in practice, and to assess the areas of decision making that enable parents and healthcare professionals to exercise their discretion. The project will involve holding two specific workshops that will cover these issues in detail in a closed format in order to enable participation. The first workshop will focus on children's capacity and best interests and the second will focus on conflicts of interests. In combination, these workshops will aim to lead to a systematic analysis of the relevant issues as well as meaningful dialogue leading to a long term network and publications.
2. Conditional Consent in Transplantation Medicine: assessing the legal, ethical and clinical factors

3. Organ Donation and Transplantation (ODT) Workshop
Closed expert and stakeholder workshop, Pembroke College, 25th November 2022.
The closed workshop addressed the challenges of different forms of consent in organ donation and transplantation in Germany and the UK, as well as the practical issues experienced by clinicians in practice. The discussions that took place between academics, clinicians, donor family members and legal practitioners from both the UK and Germany will inform a number of upcoming joint papers.
