UNIQ Graduate Assistants

The Faculty of Law is seeking to engage up to two graduate students as Graduate Assistants to support the UNIQ Summer Schools 2026. These summer schools will be held in Oxford from 7-9 July 2026 and 14-16 July 2026. 

UNIQ is a university-wide programme targeting Year 12 state school students who come from backgrounds underrepresented at Oxford and in higher education more generally. The two cohorts taking Law each comprise of about 35 students. The programme is designed to give students a taster of university study and empower them to pursue higher education at Oxford or another university. The Summer School runs for two consecutive weeks and brings in two cohorts of students: the first week takes place from 7 July to 9 July, and the second from 14 July to 16 July.   

Tasks for each Graduate Assistant will be:

  • Planning and delivering sessions on studying law at Oxford
  • Planning and delivering taster sessions on different fields of law and legal practice 
  • Planning and delivering a moot workshop/practice moot

Duration and hours 

Working hours: a total of up to 46 hours of work across the duration of the project, the exact share and distribution of hours to be agreed with the project supervisor. 

On Summer School days, students will be on-site from 09:00 – 16:30 (Tuesday, Wednesday) and 09:00 – 14:00 (Thursday), though there will be prep/downtime during the day as some sessions will be led by Faculty staff, and lunch will be led by UNIQ ambassadors. 

Start date: week commencing 22 June 2026 for up to 9 hours of planning and preparation, including safeguarding training 

Event starts: 7 July 2026

Date by which the work will be completed: 16 July 2026

Reporting

The UNIQ Graduate Assistant/s will report to Nima Mukherjee, Senior Access and Outreach Officer.

Requirements

Essential

  • A good understanding of the field of Law
  • Previous experience working with young people (16-18 years of age is desirable) 
  • Any previous experience of teaching
  • Previous experience of mooting 

Desirable

  • Knowledge of the admissions process and course structure at Oxford (i.e. from having attended a BA in Jurisprudence degree at the Faculty of Law)
  • Knowledge of the social mobility and widening participation agenda 

Your normal place of work will be the Life and Mind Building, St Cross Road (due to renovation works in the Faculty building over this period). 

In all cases the work must be undertaken in the UK.

Eligibility

This opportunity is open to current graduate students in the Faculty of Law including its Centres and Institutes.

Rate of Pay

This role forms part of the University’s centrally funded UNIQ outreach programme, supported by Crankstart funding, and therefore follows the centrally agreed University outreach pay rates. The work will be paid at £20.77 per hour, which equates to University Grade 7 point 1, on the basis of completed and approved timesheets, which must be submitted by the timesheet deadline for payment on the last working day of the following month.

In addition, paid annual leave will be assumed to be taken in the month in which it was accrued.

Guidelines for Faculty members, line managers and students

Work must not commence without a letter of engagement or variable hours contract and a right to work check having been carried out by the Faculty Personnel Officer.

Graduate student engagement opportunities in the Faculty of Law usually fall into one of three categories: Research AssistantGraduate Teaching Assistant; or Blog Editor

The University guidance on paid work for Oxford graduate students recommends that full-time graduate research students ensure that any paid work should still allow them to spend at least 40 hours per week for a minimum 44 weeks of the year on their studies. Full-time graduate taught students are recommended not to undertake more than 8 hours’ paid work each week during term-time study periods. There are additional rules for students with visas wishing to undertake paid work. 

Students may not work for their own supervisor without the approval of the Associate Dean for Graduate Students.
