The Land and Accountability Research Centre at the University of Cape Town, the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights in the Law Faculty at the University of Oxford and the Programme for the Foundations of Law and Constitutional Government at the University of Oxford held a conference on Citizenship and Accountability to draw together scholars, practitioners and judges to discuss litigating customary law and traditional leadership under South Africa’s democratic Constitution.
The conference took place on 17-18 June, 2019 at the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights. The sessions included extensive discussions on land struggles, mining and resources, traditional leaders and accountability, identifying and recognising customary law, the scope of chiefly powers and a far-reaching conversation on the way forward.
The recordings of the sessions are now available here.
