British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship
Notify Faculty of intention to apply by: 1st July 2026
Funder deadline: 26th August 2026
This is a full time, fully funded 6-12 month fellowship, with a research allowance. It is for those with a permanent academic position and who are ‘....Normally within no more than 15 years from the award of their doctorate' with allowances for career breaks. The British Academy will contribute 80% to full economic costs of awards up to £152,000 (BA contribution to Mid-Career Fellow's salary capped at upper limit of £80,000).
The aim of the scheme is to allow successful applicants to obtain time freed from normal teaching and administrative commitments. The time bought by the scheme should be devoted to the completion of a major piece of research. The Academy judges applications based '...Both on the on the quality of the research proposed and on the capacity of the applicant to communicate with a broad audience.'
This is an annual scheme. If awarded then the fellowship would (it is expected) start at earliest 1 September 2027 and at latest 1 January 2028.
A note that as this scheme involves teaching replacement, applicants must discuss their plans with and secure approval to apply from their Faculty course leaders and/or College as part of the application process (and it is suggested to organise this ASAP). The Faculty will not support the submission of applications from candidates who cannot confirm that they have provisional approval for teaching leave and replacement in the event of securing an award.
Full scheme details can be found on the British Academy website.
