Dr Isabel Quiroga and Professor Richard Smith, founders of the first uterus transplant programme in the UK

Notes & Changes

Dr Isabel Quiroga is a consultant surgeon at the Oxford Transplant Centre and the Clinical Lead for organ retrieval. She has collaborated with colleagues in India, China and Turkey to develop training courses and webinars in organ donation and retrieval in those countries. Professor Richard Smith developed the radical abdominal trachelectomy operation, a fertility sparing procedure that treats early-stage cervical cancer without the need for hysterectomy. This led on to studies on uterine transplantation. Professor Smith is also the founder and chair of Womb Transplant UK.

Together they shall discuss their success at establishing the first uterus transplant programme in the UK as well as Fertility Preservation and Restoration, describing interlinking of uterine transplantation and fertility sparing surgery for cancer.
