After la cause  has disappeared from the law of contract in the French Civil Code, the question arises whether this legal concept is still significant in continental legal systems stemming from the Code Napoléon.  In particular, the French reform makes us question the role of ‘cause’ (called causa contractus) in Italian contract law. As will be explained,  there ‘cause’ has several meanings and serves various functions and, despite several grounds for criticism, may still play a useful role.

A sandwich lunch will be available from 12.30. The meeting will begin at 1pm.
