Oxford Global Justice Annual Lecture - Judge Theodor Meron

Save the date for our forthcoming Oxford Global Justice Annual Lecture on 1 December 2014 by Judge Theodor Meron (President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia & President of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals) in The Gulbenkian at 5.15pm.

International Criminal Tribunals and the Rule of Law

After atrocities have been committed during an armed conflict, it is increasingly common for a wide variety of stakeholders to call for those who have committed crimes during the conflict to be tried before courts of law. But while victims, local political leaders, members of civil society, members of the international community, and many others may share a common desire for justice, just what justice means for these different groups--and what these different groups hope to achieve through trials--may vary greatly. President Meron will explore the sometimes conflicting expectations held by those who support international justice and calls for post-conflict accountability, and the implications of these different expectations for international criminal courts and the rule of law.
