AHRC-DFG Research Grants

AHRC-DFG Research Grants support joint UK-German research projects in the arts and humanities, with the intention of strengthening co-operation in arts and humanities between Germany and the UK.  It is funded jointly between the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the German Research Foundation (DFG). Projects will be funded for up to 36 months to a maximum value of £420,000 on the UK side (at 100% FEC, of which the AHRC will fund 80%).

Applications must consist of two (UK and German) national teams, each led by one PI.  Projects must have well-defined joint working programmes, clearly demonstrating the added value of UK-German collaboration, although projects do not have to be symmetrical. 

The UK component must be led by a researcher who falls within the AHRC remit and eligibility criteria.  International co-investigators may be included in the UK component provided they are not based in Germany.  Costs for PhD students cannot be included in the UK portion of the budget.

The maximum duration of this award is 36 months. The minimum duration is 24 months. UK projects must start by 1 February 2027. German projects are expected to follow a similar schedule.

Applications must be made via the UKRI's The Funding Service. You cannot apply on the Joint Electronic Submissions (Je-S) system. The AHRC must receive the UK partner's application by 11th February 2026 4:00pm UK time

The UK project lead must also provide a PDF copy of the Funding Service submission to the German project lead, who will need to upload this PDF to the DFG’s submission portal ‘elan’ by 11:59pm German time on 11th February 2026

The University of Oxford's Research Services deadline will be 4th February 2026.

Notifications of intention to apply should be submitted to the Faculty by 10th December 2025. A first draft will be expected for review by 12th January 2026.
