Assistance for Research, Programmes & Events Communications at the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights

The Bonavero Institute invites applications from graduate research students in the Law Faculty interested in assisting the Institute this year with communications relating to research, programmes and events, as well as providing organisational and technical support for some events. The assistant will require a working knowledge of human rights law and will have good editing and research skills.  The successful candidate will have the opportunity to get involved with a variety of research projects, programmes and events at the Bonavero and become an integral member of the Bonavero team. The successful candidate will be offered a dedicated space to work in the Helena Kennedy Reading Room at the Bonavero Institute.  Their work will be supervised by the Director of the Institute. 

The role is integral to working on the Fund for Global Human Rights research project.  A large part of the role is to work on writing, editing and proof-reading academic reports/outputs/social media posts, plus reviewing transcriptions and recordings relating to this work and related projects at the Institute.

Assistance with publicity and communications about research, programmes and events at the Bonavero Institute will include: preparing our weekly newsletter, working on reports on events and research roundtables, drafting social media communications, writing, editing and proof-reading academic reports/outputs, and reviewing transcriptions and recordings related to the Institute’s programme of work.

The work will also involve some organisational and technical support for events at the Bonavero Institute, working alongside the Events & Research Assistants, plus providing support for wider events and programmes at the Institute. The assistant will support the Director, Head of Research, Head of Programmes and the Research and Programmes Manager, as well as other team members at the Institute; and will work with permanent administrative and academic members of the Bonavero team, as well as with other Research and Events Assistants.  

The Assistant will be expected to attend the bi-monthly event planning meetings.  There will be an expectation to be based in Oxford during term time and to be present at some in-person events, workshops and conferences as requested, in advance.  

Duration and hours

The work is available on a variable-hours basis from as soon as possible until 31 July 2022, and will be carried out in Oxford.

The work will involve around 6 to 8 hours of work per week but no more than 8 hours per week, in line with the Faculty’s restriction on working hours for students.  Weekly hours will be agreed in advance with the Supervisor.

Requirements

  • A primary degree in a field related to human rights, the rule of law and democracy.
  • Current registration as a graduate research student at the University of Oxford.
  • A solid understanding of and strong interest in the broad field of human rights law.
  • Excellent writing, editing and proof-reading skills, with the ability to write and edit publicity material, event reports and compose compelling social media posts.
  • Demonstrable social media, communications and IT skills, including Zoom, PowerPoint and MS Teams.
  • A highly organised, motivated individual with a willingness to work flexibly.
  • The capacity to work effectively in a team.

Eligibility

The post is open to graduate research students at the University of Oxford working in the broad field of human rights, democracy and/or the rule of law.

Rate of Pay

This position is paid at Grade 6, point 1, £15.60/hour plus holiday pay of £2.67 per hour worked = total of £18.27/hour.

Funding

This position is funded by the Fund for Global Human Rights.

Supervisors may be asked for a reference, and the Associate Dean for Graduate Research Students must approve the appointment of a student who is supervised by Professor O’Regan.

Graduate students in the Faculty of Law may work up to 8 hours per week, or a common sense average across the year.

Work must not commence without a letter of engagement and a right to work check having been carried out.
