Associate Professorship of Law and Tutorial Fellowship in association with Hertford College

Hertford College, Oxford proposes to appoint a Tutor and Official Fellow in Law.  The post is tenable from 1 October 2018, or at an earlier or later date by negotiation.  This is a joint appointment, to be held in association with an Associate Professorship of Law, in the Faculty of Law, University of Oxford.  The appointment is for five years in the first instance, with reappointment to retirement upon completion of a successful review.

The duties of the Fellowship will involve a substantial element of teaching and research as well as some administrative duties.  The College’s preference is for someone willing and able to teach at least two of: Contract Law, Tort Law, Land Law, Trusts, Criminal Law and Jurisprudence.  The Faculty welcomes applications from candidates able to teach for it in any of the subjects falling within its BA and graduate BCL/MJur curricula.  Preference will be given to candidates who can teach one of: Commercial Remedies, Company Law, Land Law, Medical Law and Ethics, Personal Property, or Trusts Law.

The appointee will be responsible for undergraduate teaching in Law at Hertford.  The tutorial teaching load for the College will be an average of eight hours per week in pairs and small classes over each term.  They will also assist with the pastoral care of undergraduates, share responsibility for the admissions exercise for undergraduate Law courses, engage in advanced study and research, and contribute to the academic life and governance of the College.  For the Faculty, the appointee will give no fewer than sixteen lectures each academic year, as well as undertake graduate teaching and supervision.

Candidates will hold a doctorate in a relevant subject, or an established record of accomplishment in legal research, and a record of high quality research and publications commensurate with their career experience.  Candidates will need to demonstrate outstanding research excellence and exceptional teaching experience.  The salary will be on Grade 10a (36S) of the University scale, currently £46,336 - £62,219 per annum.  The precise sum will depend on qualifications and experience, and will be pensionable with USS.  The Fellow will be entitled to an office in College, membership of the College’s Senior Common Room (SCR), and allowances for research, computer equipment and entertainment.  A college housing allowance (currently £9,437 p.a.) is available if the Fellow does not occupy college residential living accommodation, and access to a shared equity scheme to assist with house purchase is available.  Associate Professors who are awarded the title of full Professor may receive from the University an additional salary payment of £2,700 per annum.  Further particulars for the post, including details on how to apply, are available at: http://www.hertford.ox.ac.uk/about/vacancies.
