Many benefits have been demonstrated for researchers undertaking Public Engagement with Research (PER). Furthermore it can provide researchers with skills for professional development, which can be particularly beneficial for those early in their career, whichever future career path is chosen. However, it also takes time and resource, alongside the many other priorities and duties carried out by ECRs.

At what point in a researcher's career should the bid to engage the public begin? Or should the focus for those in the earlier stages of their career be the pursuit of publications until they are better established - the engagement part can come later? In what ways can we improve research culture to enable ECRs to pursue their public engagement plans?
