Building on 'Women Police in Contemporary China: Women in policing leadership'
Abstract
In this talk, I will outline the book Women Police in Contemporary China: Gender and policing, which examines the introduction and development of female police in China, focusing on women’s experiences within the People’s Police today. This includes an analysis of their roles, positions and treatment in the police organisation from a gender lens. I will then present a recent follow-up study, exploring women in policing leadership in this jurisdiction. I argue that China applies its own understanding of gender equality, with female officers interpreting equity and integration in ways that reflect the local socio-political context. Together, the book and the extended study generate original insights into women’s experiences in law enforcement and provide a perspective that enriches existing understandings, which have often been shaped by frameworks developed in Western systems.
The Feminist Jurisprudence Discussion Group and the Chinese Law Discussion Groups co-host this discussion. The event will take place as a hybrid event with Prof Shen presenting online. Attendees from the Law Faculty can join online from Seminar Room D as well.
