Professor Anne Weyembergh and Dr Julia Burchett will present on detention conditions in the context of cooperation in criminal matters in the EU, building on their 2022 study commissioned by the European Parliament. That study provided background information and policy recommendations concerning prisons and detention conditions in the EU, on the basis of European and national regulations, legislation, policies and practices.
Professor Weyembergh is a full time Professor at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (Faculty of Law and Institute for European Studies). Together with Serge de Biolley, she founded the European Criminal Law Academic Network (ECLAN) in 2004. She has been co-coordinating the Network (with Valsamis Mitsilegas and Katalin Ligeti) since then. She has chaired the Institute of European Studies, directed the Centre for European Law and held the position of Vice-Dean for International Relations at the Faculty of Law and Criminology.
Dr Burchett is a postdoctoral researcher affiliated with the Centre for European Law. Her research primarily focuses on European criminal law. Following the completion of a postdoctoral research on the right of victims of cross-border crimes (2021-2023), she is currently conducting a postdoctoral reasearch addressing the EU’s reponse to the war in Ukraine and the fight against impunity for serious international crimes.
