Crowdfunding: A Comparative Study

Abstract: Over the past two decades, crowdfunding has emerged as a significant alternative to traditional channels of corporate finance, enabling a wide range of ventures to access capital through internet-based platforms. Adopting a comparative law perspective, this presentation first maps the regulatory frameworks governing crowdfunding in the EU and the UK. It then moves beyond a purely descriptive account to examine whether, and to what extent, crowdfunding can genuinely function as a vehicle for what has been described as “financial democracy”.
