For over 20,000 people detained each year in the UK under immigration law powers, to apply for release on bail is a fundamental right which they need to be able to exercise. This report, based on the observations of over 200 hearings, mostly law students trained by the Project, shows how the right is curtailed and makes recommendations for improvement.

Campsfield immigration detention centre – just north of Oxford – is due to reopen in the near future. The issue of immigration bail will be a burning one for the people imprisoned there. The UK detains more migrants – including people who will be recognised as refugees - for longer than any other country in Europe, and without time limit or proper judicial oversight.
