Abstract

Drawing on my recent book Gender, Prison and Reentry Experiences – A Matter of Time (w/ Dixie Rocker, published by Routledge), this talk examines reentry experiences in Portugal, focusing on the lived prison experiences of incarcerated people who are about to be released from prison, and the structural, institutional, and personal barriers they face. In doing so, it questions the role of incarceration in perpetuating criminalisation and hindering the reentry process. Then, reflecting on this empirical data, the presentation moves to an approach to (social) justice in line with abolitionist reimaginations. This entails both providing recommendations to tackle the immediate needs of incarcerated people and advocating for the abolition of prisons. To find adequate and suitable ways of achieving justice, we must keep claiming for decarceration and prison abolition, widening its presence across fields of study, and finding ways of reimagining justice beyond prison walls.
